About Me.

Hello! I'm Dr. Wright, an educator, author, and lifelong advocate for making mathematics accessible and exciting for young learners. With a Ph.D. in Urban Education and over eight years of classroom experience, I've seen firsthand how powerful storytelling can be in breaking down math anxiety and building a strong foundation of understanding.

My mission is to bridge the gap between numbers and narratives, creating resources that empower parents and teachers to foster a love for math in their children. I believe that every child can succeed in math when they see it as a creative and exploratory subject, not just a set of rules to memorize.

Education

2018-2025

Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction
University of North Carolina @ Charlotte

My research on math anxiety in Black third-grade boys sharpened my skills in listening to children, translating complex ideas into kid-friendly language, and designing confidence-building activities—skills I bring to every story and educator guide.

2017-2018

Masters of Art in Teaching (MAT)
University of North Carolina @ Greensboro

Through coursework and a year-long clinical placement, I built skills in standards-aligned lesson design, formative assessment, culturally responsive pedagogy, classroom management, and family engagement. Highlights include leading a full-time student-teaching placement and developing unit plans and take-home activities—experiences that now shape my kid-friendly storytelling and the educator guides that accompany my books.

2011-2013

Bachelor of Arts
SUNY Buffalo State

Here is where I built core skills in research, academic writing, and audience-friendly communication that now shape my children’s books. That foundation set the stage for my graduate work and guides the classroom-ready educator guides and family discussion prompts that accompany my books.

My Story

I’m Dr. Andrea Wright, a math educator, researcher, and children’s author who believes stories can open doors to wonder, identity, and joyful learning. Bronx-born and classroom-grown, I’ve spent the last eight years teaching and coaching math across grades Pre-K–8. Along the way, I noticed something powerful: when children see themselves in stories, they lean into curiosity—about history, about numbers, about who they can become.

That belief shapes everything I write. My books blend culture, creativity, and kid-friendly math to help young readers build confidence and see the beauty in problem-solving. I’ve recently completed my Ph.D. in Curriculum & Instruction (Urban Education), where my research explores math anxiety—especially how we can better support Black boys in elementary classrooms with affirming, relationship-centered practices.

Today, I live and work in the Washington, D.C. area (DCPS), partnering with families, schools, and community organizations to bring math and literacy to life. On this site, you’ll find read-alouds, educator lesson plans, and printable activities designed to make learning feel like an adventure.

When I’m not writing or cheering on young mathematicians, you’ll find me in the classrooms, hosting author talks, and dreaming up new ways to help kids say, “I am a math person.”

Invite me to your school or event: Author visits, family math nights, professional learning for teachers, and custom workshops.
